Supercomputers\nhave been used for the engineering and scientific applications which require a\ngreat amount of computation or must handle very large databases. A\nsupercomputer has the resources, architecture, and components, which help it to\nachieve massive computing power. Today’s supercomputers consist of tens of\nthousands of processors, which are capable to perform billions and trillions of\ncomputations or calculations per second.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Supercomputer\nand its usages:<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Primarily,\nSupercomputers are designed to be used in organizations and enterprises, which\nrequire massive computing power. This computer incorporates operational and\narchitectural principles from grid and parallel processing. Although,\nsupercomputers require substantial floor space and houses thousands of\nprocessors. This system contains most of the key components of a typical\ncomputer, including peripheral devices, a processor(s), connectors, an\noperating system, and applications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Importance\nof Energy Consumption<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In general,\nSupercomputers consume lots of energy, which produces immense heat. These\nsystems are required to install necessary cooling technologies to negate this\nheat, and it makes them more expensive and costly to maintain. Hence, to\nencourage corporations and institutions to create more energy efficient\nsupercomputers, that can deliver higher output and consume less power. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of 2013, IBM\nSequoia is the fastest supercomputer that has 98,000 processors, which allow it\nto process at a speed of 16,000 trillion calculations per second.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How supercomputers\nbecame a milestone in India?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Supercomputers use\ntheir efficiency and high computational speeds to help many sectors in our\ncountry, such as weather forecasting, scientific research, missile simulation,\ncreating life-saving pharmaceutical drugs, understanding the creation of the\nuniverse, and much more. A concept called \u2018parallel computing\u2019 makes a\nSupercomputer \u201csuper\u201d. Basically, parallel processing breaks up any tasks into\nsmaller sections, which can be processed in parallel. And the final result is\nobtained by combining outputs from each processor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the late 1980s,\nthe supercomputer effort began in India, when the US Govt. banned the export of\nCray supercomputer because of continuing technology embargoes. The USA and some\nother European countries had developed supercomputers, during the 80s. But with\nthose computers govt. faced a critical problem in developing satellites and\nnuclear weapons. These countries refused India to deliver the knowledge of\ncreating supercomputers, fearing that, the developing nation might use it to\ndesign warplanes and missiles rather than forecast the weather.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When India faced a\ntechnology-denial regime that denied its scientific community access to\nsupercomputers, they set up (C-DAC) or the Centre for Development of Advanced\nComputing in March 1988. It created with clear consent to develop an indigenous\nsupercomputer, which can meet high-speed computational needs in solving\nscientific and other developmental problems where fast number crunching is a\nmajor component.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vijay\nBhatkar, the Man behind India’s first supercomputer ‘PARAM’ <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Vijay Bhatkar is a\nwell-known computer scientist and the upcoming third chancellor of Nalanda\nUniversity. He was also the former chair of IIT Delhi\u2019s board of governors and\nthe president of RSS-affiliated outfit Vijnana Bharati, which promotes\n\u2018swadeshi\u2019 science.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The President of\nIndia, Shri Pranab Mukherjee, in his capacity as the Visitor of Nalanda\nUniversity appointed Dr. Vijay P. Bhatkar for a three-year term with effect\nfrom January 25, 2017; as the Chancellor of Nalanda University. Vijay Bhatkar\nis famous as the architect of India’s first supercomputer Param 8000, and it\nwas at his effort, initiative, and vision that several national institutions,\nnotably amongst them being IIITM-K, I2IT, C-DAC, ER&DC, ETH Research Lab,\nMKCL and India International Multiversity, were created.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

PARAM\n8000 the supercomputer of India and how it\u2019s amazed the World in 1991<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The supercomputer\nof India, PARAM Yuva II has been ranked 44th in the prestigious Green500 List\nand it was declared at the SuperComputing Conference in Denver, Colorado.\nPARAM, created by the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC), is\nnow India\u2019s most power efficient computing system. In Sanskrit, Param means\n\u2018Supreme\u2019. And this Param 8000 is a series of gigaflop supercomputers that was\ndesigned and assembled by C-DAC in Pune, India. In 1991, Param 8000 was\nunveiled and became India\u2019s first Super Computer which was 100% developed and\ndesigned in India.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\nimpact of Param 8000 on the modern technical field<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In India, the name\nCentre for Development of Advanced Computing or C-DAC has become identical with\nsupercomputers. It is a term which indicates any computing environment which\nmakes use of high computational speeds, and advanced tools. C-DAC helps\nresearchers in different fields such as weather forecasting, missile\nsimulation, scientific R & D, space science, pharmaceutical research and\nmuch more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The journey of Param 8000<\/a> began when the U.S. govt. denied exporting their Cray Supercomputers as they feared India might use it for Defense, Space, and Nuclear programs. So, in 1991 India Govt and C-DAC called for scientists from all over the country to work on the first supercomputer of India, Param 8000. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

At first, everyone\nwas in the doubt, but the extraordinary happened within three years when\neveryone involved working their socks off. Within the proposed deadline, C-DAC\nfinally completed its work and bought off the shelves India\u2019s first indigenous\nsupercomputer, PARAM 8000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The usage\nof PARAM:<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In the latest\nseries, Param Yuva II has developed at an expenditure of Rs 16 crore, which\nconsumes 35% less energy and performs at a peak of 524 teraflops compared to\nthe last of the series: Param Yuva. The whole design of Param Yuva II has been\nbased around its usage in the fields of bioinformatics, weather forecasting,\nspace, seismic data analysis, scientific data processing, aeronautical\nengineering, and pharmaceutical development along with assistance in nuclear\ntechnology as well. Via National Knowledge Network, Institutions such as IIT,\nIIM etc can link to it as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Union Minister\nfor Communications and Technology, Kapil Sibal, has congratulated C-DAC, Pune\nfor creating such high performance yet low on energy consumption supercomputer\nin India, and said that Supercomputing is really important for the all-round\nadvancement in the country, and for capacity-building, advanced research and\ndevelopment, the government is planning a big impetus in this area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\nLittle Story of India\u2019s First Indigenous Supercomputer<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Nevertheless, it\u2019s\nobvious that India needs to do better while showing great promise in the field\nof supercomputing. The government of India is working with the best motto and\nhas initiated the Rs. 4,500-crore National Supercomputing Mission. In the\ncountry, the Government of India empowers an ambitious target of installing\nmore than 70 high-performance computing facilities and these computers will be\nconnected by the National Knowledge Network.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
